New datacenter, new servers and other new stuff for fotopages!
|
|
A few days ago we completed the move to a new datacenter where we also installed lots of other new hardware.
The effects are already apparent as we have seen a big increase in traffic along with faster page loads over all - the last 2 days have shown record levels of traffic which is cool.. We still plan to install more servers and upgrade some of the existing servers which will further improve matters.
Also expect a host of new features on fotopages soon, more web2.0 stuff, more cool stuff, more sharing, more community, more of everything that is good!

Pidgin Technologies is Moving House
|
|
Fotopages & BoardTracker continue to grow and so to keep up with demands we are moving to a new and better datacenter and will be installing lots of new blade servers.
In the next few days we'll start migrating all our systems over to the new datacenter and we expect the whole process to take several days.
Hopefully there will be little or no noticable downtime during the move but if things are flaky now and then you know why and don't worry - it will all be back to normal soon enough and even better than before!
We have some very cool new features planned which are currently just waiting for the move to be completed before we launch them so things are going to be exciting around here very soon!

Fotopages Forums go Web2.0 with Tags
|
|
Just the other day we installed the BoardTracker Topic Tags Mod in our support forums here on fotopages. What this mod does is allow you to 'tag' new topics when you post and these tags then link to tag search on BoardTracker. You can see a topic tags example here..
http://discuss.fotopages.com/ftopic1418.html
Tags are all the rage these days as many of you will know but so far have been used mainly on blogs and linked to search on places like del.icio.us, technorati and others, but now also boards can ride the web2.0 wave!
Needless to say we have the tags mod installed on BoardTracker support forums also.

Del.icio.us bookmarks
|
|
Today we added a 'bookmark' link to every entry (next to 'share') making it very easy for your visitors to save and tag the entry link to del.icio.us. Del.icio.us, if you don't yet know it, is a popular social bookmark/favorites sharing web2.0 type thingummy which was recently aquired by Yahoo. Its handy since now your visitors can quickly save the link to a specific fotopages entry and that link is also shared (and searchable) with other del.icio.us users.
More web 2.0 widgetry coming soon.

Multiple daily entries on fotopages and more..
|
|
Today we made some changes to fotopages which I think you will like.. we certainly had plenty of requests for these..
First of all you can now edit the date of existing entries - we often get members asking us to change dates on posts so now you can do it yourself anytime you want.
Second change is now you are no longer restricted to one entry per day! You can now post as many entries as you want and each entry will have the exact time of the entry, not just the date. Plus you can set the time/date of the entry to anything you want at the time of the post so you can make entries for the past and future.
More new fotopages features on the way soon..

SES - Second day
|
|
Chicago is still painfully cold..
Second day started slow and quiet. Expo hall showed little life at the beginning and moved to mild activity later on.
I met Darren Hohnson from Offermatica.com. Offermatica has a system for trying out different site layouts and changes, done dynamically, to your site, and tracking the effectiveness of each variation. The system allows you to try out different HTMLs, Images, or anything you want to change on your site, and tracks how well each one did. So, for example, if you have an eCommerce site, you can try placing different products on the index page and see which option converts the best or makes the most money. Alternatively, if you have a registration based site, you can try different layouts to see which one gets more people to signup. Etc... Very nice system, but I guess due to the price tag, it is relevant mainly to sites which have substantial earnings. If your site is such a site, it is worth a look.
The day ended with a Search-bash, organized by Daron and Brandy from WebmasterRadio.fm (which if you are a webmaster, you MUST have in your bookmarks ). The party was great. Really. So, many thanks to Daron and Brandy and of course to the party sponsors: Bruce Clay Inc, PositionTech, TrueLocal and the New York Times
It was held in Buddy Guy's club near the hotel, and Buddy Guy himself gave a GREAT performance with his so very talanted band. It was truly a great night.
During the show I had the pleasure of chatting with Danny Sullivan (who is also the person that started the SES show) and Chris Sherman, both from SearchEngineWatch.
Went to sleep late enough, only to wake up in the morning to a snow blizzard covering the entire Chicago city with 4" or more of snow...
Overall, SES show was a good one. Looking forward to the NYC one in Feb/Mar 2006, and the UK one later on that year.
